Shen builds a field that can survive the return attack. Sona pays for the next defense, while Tank, Shield and carefully chosen answers protect the units earning your Holds.

Should you play Shen?

Pick Shen if you enjoy taking a field and making every attempt to recover it expensive. Think twice if you want your biggest turns to happen without preserving a board first.

Best for: Patient players who like defensive combat, reactive deployments and choosing which unit absorbs the damage.
Think twice if: You tend to leave too few resources for the opponent's turn or save every unit even when conceding one field would be cheaper.

Key Cards

Eye of Twilight gives a friendly unit Tank for the turn, letting you choose which body must take combat damage first. Sona readies up to four friendly runes at the end of your turn if she is at a battlefield. Ki Barrier then turns a Tank into a much harder obstacle by preventing its next seven damage. The plan needs all three parts: a field, a useful defender and resources available when the opponent commits.

Shen’s Field Guide

Shen is a board-control Legend. Tank lets you decide which friendly unit the opponent must deal with first in combat, and Shield makes the right defenders harder to remove while increasing the damage they deal back. That is useful only if the units behind them are doing something worth protecting. A Sona on a battlefield restores resources for the next defense; an established group earns Holds while the opponent spends cards trying to break it. You still need to take the field in the first place. Sitting at base with several defensive tricks does not create a scoring plan.

How Shen wins

Establish a field with affordable units, develop a useful payoff behind them and make the return attack require more than the opponent expected. Kinkou can arrive as a Reaction to a field you control, bringing Shield 2 and Tank without being on the board beforehand. Sona can restore up to four runes at the end of your own turn, giving you Energy to defend after developing. Stuns reduce the enemy's combat damage, prevention keeps the designated Tank alive, and counters protect against the answers those combat tools cannot beat. Once the position is stable, send only the units the next field requires. Keeping one reliable Hold is often better than weakening both fields to threaten a second point.

Shen, Kinkou · Ki Barrier · Kinkou Temple

Kinkou is five Might while defending, or six at Temple because he has Tank. Ki Barrier prevents his next seven damage, so an undamaged six-Might Kinkou would need thirteen damage assigned to kill him through the full Barrier. Tank requires dealing with that before assigning combat damage to friendly units without Tank. Barrier is finite prevention, not immunity; direct kill effects and movement answers still need a different response.

Develop now, defend after Sona

Sona, Harmonious · Meditation · Defy

Sona must be at a battlefield when your end-of-turn trigger is generated. She then readies up to four runes still on your board, not runes you already recycled for Power. That can fund Meditation, defensive units or counters on the opponent's turn. Meditation can exhaust a ready friendly unit as an additional cost to draw two instead of one, but count the movement you give up. Neither card refunds the Power needed for Defy or Kinkou.

Two bodies make the next one cheaper

Noxian Drummer · Keeper of Law · Trusty Ramhound

Drummer makes a Recruit when it moves to a battlefield. If those are exactly the two units at a field you control, Keeper of Law costs three Energy with no Power. Check the count when paying for Keeper: putting a third unit there first turns the discount off. Ramhound also likes a companion, gaining a Might while another friendly unit is at its location. These are reasons to develop a useful group, not to put every unit on the same field.

Strengths

Reaction units and combat protection let a held field become stronger after the opponent commits to attacking it.
Sona supports development on your turn without leaving every rune exhausted for the next defense.
Cheap bodies and Keeper's conditional discount give the defensive cards a board to protect.

Weaknesses

Shield and Tank do not stop direct kill effects, relocation or answers aimed at the payoff behind the defender.
Sona needs battlefield presence, and her rune readiness cannot restore spent Power.
A defensive hand can fall behind if it cannot establish a field before the opponent starts scoring.

Shadow's take

This is the Shen list I like for building a real board before trying to protect it. The three Drummers and three Ramhounds give the early units a useful follow-up, and Keeper can add five Might for three Energy when the field count is right. Sona is still the card I want the opponent to struggle to remove. The three Defys, Ki Barriers and Hidden answers are much more threatening when I have enough runes to use them after developing. I would avoid treating every incoming attack as a fight that has to be won. Divide can preserve the important units, and Charm can change which field an enemy threat occupies on my own turn. Sometimes those are better than spending the entire hand to keep one point. The goal is a position that keeps scoring, not proving that the first defender can survive anything.

The Game Plan

Early gameKeep a cheap unit and a follow-up that can contest a field. Poro and Mouser defend above their printed Might; Ramhound wants another friendly unit at the same location. Drummer can move out to make a Recruit, giving you two bodies and potentially the exact field count for a discounted Keeper. I would return redundant counters or expensive deployments when the rest of the hand cannot establish that first group. A defensive spell is only useful once there is something worth defending.
MidgamePut Sona on a battlefield without leaving her as the only plan for surviving the next attack. Her end-of-turn readiness can restore four runes, but keep the Power requirements separate. For example, defending Sona at Temple with a fresh Kinkou and Ki Barrier costs five Energy and two Order Power. Kinkou becomes a six-Might Tank there, and the Barrier can absorb an ordinary seven-Might attack while the defenders deal ten back. That turn needs five Energy available, not merely the four runes Sona can ready. If the opposing threat is too large or the answer bypasses combat, spend the appropriate counter or leave the field rather than assuming more prevention fixes it.
Late gameUse the smallest answer that preserves the scoring position. Defy checks the spell's printed cost: no more than four Energy and one Power, even if the opponent actually paid less or added a cost. Hidden Blade removes a unit at a battlefield but gives its controller two cards. Back Off draws only when played from hand, while a Hidden Kennen still needs two Energy for the optional stun. Vi can stun when she becomes an attacker, not when she simply arrives to defend. Divide preserves units by moving them to base, but does not ready them. Count the next Hold and the next legal attack before giving up a field or spending the last protection card.

Blind

Kinkou Temple · Mutated Mouser · Eye of Twilight

Temple adds one Might to units here with Tank. Mouser and Kinkou already qualify; the Legend can grant Tank to Poro or another useful body for the turn. The bonus helps attack and defense, although Shield still applies only while defending. Opposing Tanks get the same benefit. I would begin here when the opening can establish units that make the bonus useful without needing a perfect follow-up.

Going First

Startipped Peak · Sona, Harmonious

Holding Peak can channel an extra rune exhausted, giving a stable board more resources for later turns. It is not an immediate Energy refund for conquering, and the Rune Deck needs a rune left to channel. Sona can ready that rune at the end of your turn if it is still on the board. I would choose Peak when the hand can take and keep it, rather than accepting an empty board in exchange for a ramp trigger that may never happen.

Going Second

Hallowed Tomb · Shen, Kinkou · Ki Barrier

Tomb can return the chosen Kinkou from trash to an empty Champion Zone when you Hold here. That makes spending him on an important defense less permanent, but the Hold has to happen and replaying him still costs three Energy and an Order Power. It does not recover Sona or any other Champion in the deck. I would use it when repeated Kinkou defenses are likely to matter more than Temple's immediate Might or Peak's additional rune.

Match protection to the actual answer

Decree of Focus · Not So Fast · Defy

Focus is efficient when a friendly unit is fighting an actual Fury unit or being chosen by an enemy Fury spell. Not So Fast reaches a spell or ability choosing your unit or Gear, including threats Defy's cost restriction misses. Swap the less useful protection for the one covering the opponent's real cards. Neither is a reason to remove all the affordable units or assume you can counter an effect that does not meet its targeting condition.

Make targeted removal more expensive

Allay, Eager Admirer · Salvage

Allay gives your other units at its battlefield Deflect while providing another three-Might body. That helps when targeted answers are the problem; it does not stop a sweep that chooses nothing. Salvage is for important Gear and replaces itself, even when no Gear needs killing. I would trim a less effective answer or slow body for these jobs instead of adding utility at the expense of the whole early board.

Make a defended Hold end the game sooner

Ahri, Alluring · Sona, Harmonious · Eye of Twilight

Ahri adds a point when she Holds, so the same protection can have a larger payoff against a slower opponent. She costs five Energy and a Calm Power and must remain on a battlefield until that Hold; playing or conquering with her does not immediately score the extra point. Bring her when you can support another payoff, trimming a removal spell or expensive body with less work to do. If you cannot keep the first field, adding Ahri will not solve that opening problem.
