Renata Glasc’s Field Guide

When you or an ally Hold, Chem-Baroness may exhaust to create a Gold exhausted. That is a reward for keeping a battlefield, not for taking it in the first place. A ready Gold can be exhausted and killed for one Power of any domain. Once your score is within three points of victory—five points in a normal eight-point game—it also adds one Energy. That bonus applies to all your Gold while you meet the threshold, including tokens made by other cards or saved from earlier turns.

How Renata Glasc wins

Renata needs a board that can earn the first points without treating every Gold as a reason to stop developing units. A Hold builds resources, those resources help defend or retake a field, and reaching five points makes the remaining Gold better at paying for an expensive closing turn. The chosen Champion changes how that happens. Mastermind offers paid card draw and a point-scoring ability while at a battlefield. Industrialist instead makes new tokens ready, letting the deck use Gold immediately and turn token production into attacks. The featured list takes the first route; it builds Gold through Holds and spends it on Mastermind's abilities.

Key interactions

Gold usually pays for the next turn

Chem-Baroness · Honest Broker · Plundering Poro

Honest Broker leaves a Gold when it dies and Plundering Poro makes one when it conquers, but like the Legend's Gold, each enters exhausted. It readies with the rest of your board at the start of your next turn, when you can exhaust and kill it for one Power of any domain, plus one Energy once you are within three points of victory. Renata Glasc, Industrialist is the exception: while she is in play, your tokens enter ready. You cannot use a Gold that is still waiting to be created to pay a cost that comes first.

Mastermind turns Gold into points

Renata Glasc, Mastermind · Chem-Baroness

Mastermind's abilities only work while she is at a battlefield. Drawing costs one Energy and one Mind Power; scoring a point costs four Energy, four Mind Power and exhausting her. Gold's Power can pay the Mind portion of either. A standard move exhausts her, so she has to begin your turn at a battlefield if you want to score with her that turn.

The Hold has to happen first

Chem-Baroness

The Legend makes Gold only when you or an ally Hold, and it exhausts to do so, which means one Gold per turn however many battlefields you Hold. A unit that dies or is removed before your Beginning Phase cannot Hold for you. Temporary units die at the start of that phase, before scoring, so keep a permanent unit where the Hold matters.

Strengths

Gold can turn a successful Hold or a small unit's trade into resources for the following play, with an extra Energy per token once you reach five points.
Gold made by other cards benefits from the Legend's extra Energy as well, so every Gold you save becomes more valuable once you reach five points.
Order's kill effects and Mind's combat manipulation let the list attack large units without relying entirely on winning a raw Might comparison.

Weaknesses

The Legend does nothing for a board that cannot keep a battlefield through Hold. Spending too much on future value can leave it with no income.
Gold normally enters exhausted, so the turn you take or keep a battlefield usually cannot spend the Gold it produces.
Mastermind can only use her abilities while she is at a battlefield, so removing her or the board protecting her can delay the finish by a full turn.

Shadow's take

This is my Renata pick because it uses the Legend's Gold for exactly what Mastermind needs. Once you are within three points of victory, every Gold adds an Energy along with its Power, so four ready Gold pay for Mastermind's four Energy and four Mind Power by themselves. That point comes from her ability rather than a conquest, which means it can be your last point without scoring every battlefield that turn. The rest of the deck exists to keep a battlefield long enough to get there. Plundering Poro, Honest Broker, Card Sharp and Wages of Pain make the early Gold, while World Atlas turns each Hold into two more and Ornn, Forge God grows with every gear on your side. I also like Hostile Takeover here: take the opponent's lone unit at a battlefield and you conquer it, then Deathgrip can kill that borrowed unit as your own, give its Might to another friendly unit and draw a card. Just remember that Mastermind has to be ready at a battlefield to score, and a standard move exhausts her, so she should already be there when the turn starts.

The Game Plan

Early gameKeep two-Energy units and a way to protect the first battlefield you take. Plundering Poro makes Gold when it conquers, Honest Broker leaves Gold when it dies, and Patched Porobot draws when you play it while you control three or more other gear, so it gets better once Gold has built up. Shen, Kinkou is the defensive play: as a Reaction you can put him onto a battlefield you control during the opponent's attack, and Shield 2 with Tank makes him hard to get through. Card Sharp gives you one Gold, or two if the opponent takes one of their own. Every Gold here enters exhausted, so plan to spend it on the following turn.
MidgameWorld Atlas costs three Energy, and equipping it costs one Mind Power. Put it on a unit that is likely to Hold, since the bearer makes two Gold each time it does, and Shen with the Atlas has five Might, or seven while defending. Ornn's Weaponmaster lets him take the Atlas when he is played, even from another unit, but you still pay the one Mind Power because Weaponmaster only discounts an Equip cost that uses Power of any domain. Hostile Takeover costs five Energy and two Power to take control of an enemy unit at a battlefield and ready it, and you conquer if no other enemies are there. The unit goes back at the end of the turn, so cash it in first: Deathgrip kills it for good, and Hidden Blade on it lets you draw two because you control it. Wages of Pain deals three to a unit at a battlefield and leaves a Gold behind.
Late gameAt five points, start counting Gold for Mastermind. Play her directly to a battlefield you control a turn before you need the point, since she enters exhausted, or keep her there from an earlier turn: she has to start your turn ready at a battlefield to score. Her other ability draws a card for one Energy and one Mind Power without exhausting her. Time Warp gives you another turn where she readies and your battlefields Hold again, but at ten Energy and four Mind Power it competes with her score for the same Gold. Spending Gold also makes Ornn smaller, so keep enough when he is the unit holding the battlefield. Ki Barrier can prevent the next seven damage to Mastermind or the Atlas bearer for a turn, although extra combat damage can still be assigned to kill it.

Battlefields

Blind

Grove of the God-Willow · World Atlas

Grove draws a card when you Hold it, and this list already rewards Holds through the Legend and World Atlas. A single Hold here with an Atlas bearer can give you the Legend's Gold, two Atlas Gold and a card. It does nothing on a conquest, and the opponent draws as well if they Hold it.

For early Gold

Treasure Hoard · Plundering Poro

When you conquer Treasure Hoard, you may pay one Energy to play a Gold exhausted. Plundering Poro conquering here can make two Gold from one attack, one from its own trigger and one from Hoard. The opponent gets the same option when they conquer it.
