Jhin’s Field Guide

Virtuoso may banish a spell after it resolves if you spent at least four Energy to play that spell. Once four spells are banished with the Legend, they go to their owners' trashes, you channel four runes, and draw a card. Those runes enter ready, so the fourth spell can fund more plays immediately. You still need runes left in the Rune Deck; if fewer than four remain, you only channel what is available. Keep the stored cards separate from other banished cards. Spending four Energy across several cheap spells is not the same as spending four on one spell, and repeating a spell's effect does not make it several cards for the Legend.

How Jhin wins

Use the first spells to keep the opponent's scoring manageable while building a board that can use the eventual resource burst. Meticulous Killer helps bridge that gap: after you spend four or more Energy on one spell that turn, he can be played for one Mind Power instead of four Energy. That gives you a real unit without consuming more of the Energy needed for interaction. The fourth stored spell should lead to a useful follow-up, whether that is a ready attacker, another removal spell, or enough resources to take an extra turn from an established board. Drawing more cards is worthwhile, but the deck still wins by keeping units at battlefields and turning those cards into points.

Key interactions

Pay for the modes you actually need

Curtain Call · Virtuoso

Curtain Call starts at four Energy for one mode. Its three different Repeat payments let you add more modes, but each chosen mode must be different. Paying all three costs six Energy and two Power of any domain in total. You can combine the 2 damage at a battlefield with the -4 Might on the same enemy unit, or take a draw while dealing with a unit in a base. Do not pay for a mode with no useful target just to make the spell look bigger. It is still one spell for Virtuoso, whether you use one mode or all four.

Choose between the cheap draw and the fourth spell

Consult the Past · Downstage Dramatics · Jhin, Meticulous Killer

Consult from hand spends four Energy, draws two, and can advance the Legend. The same card played from Hidden later usually spends no Energy, so it does not supply that qualifying spell. Downstage Dramatics offers another choice: two Energy for one card, or four Energy with Repeat for two cards and one qualifying spell. If the opponent counters your four-Energy spell, Virtuoso does not trigger. When you play Meticulous Killer, his Vision lets you keep or recycle the top card before your next draw.

Preserve rune Energy with Gold

Deadly Flourish · Plundering Poro

Flourish can leave exhausted Gold when its chosen unit dies that turn, while Plundering Poro makes exhausted Gold when it conquers. Once ready, Gold exhausts and kills itself for one Power of any domain. Spending that token instead of recycling a rune preserves the rune for future Energy, but a newly exhausted Gold cannot make the current payment. None of these effects channels a rune.

Strengths

The fourth stored spell channels ready runes, letting a defensive play become the start of a much larger turn rather than its end.
Meticulous Killer turns a qualifying spell into an efficient unit deployment. You can answer a threat and still put a fighter on the board.
Flexible damage, Gear removal, and large follow-up units give the deck several ways to turn control into points. An extra turn becomes dangerous once those units are already in position.

Weaknesses

The first cycle needs four resolved qualifying spells. An opponent who scores quickly can force you to use the cheapest available answer instead of developing that cycle.
Several important spells lack Action or Reaction. Having enough resources does not mean you can play the answer during a Showdown.
Large draws and expensive spells need a board worth supporting. If every unit is gone, another full hand may not stop the opponent taking the final point.

Shadow's take

This is my Jhin pick because nineteen of its 25 spells cost at least four Energy as printed and seventeen of them (all but Time Warp, which banishes itself) are ones Virtuoso can store, so most turns can be built around a spell that Virtuoso stores and that Jhin, Meticulous Killer can follow. Once you have spent four Energy on a spell this turn, Killer is a 4-Might body for one Mind Power and Noxus Hopeful drops to two Energy through Legion, which means Curtain Call or Deadly Flourish can hit a unit and still put eight Might on the board in the same turn. Sprite Burst is the card I like most here: for five Energy it adds two ready 3-Might Sprites that can move to a battlefield the turn they arrive, and because they die at the start of your next Beginning Phase, before scoring, they are there to conquer rather than hold. Consult the Past, Downstage Dramatics and Frigid Touch let you store a spell at Reaction speed on the opponent's turn, as long as you play Consult from your hand and pay the Repeat on the other two so each spends four Energy. When the fourth stored spell channels four ready runes, you move closer to the ten Energy and four Mind Power that Time Warp asks for, and the extra turn should be worth the most with permanent units like Thousand-Tailed Watcher or Ferrous Forerunner already in place, since Sprites played earlier die at the start of the extra turn's Beginning Phase, before scoring.

The Game Plan

Early gameForecaster, Plundering Poro, Downstage Dramatics and Frigid Touch cost two Energy each, while Stupefy and Orb of Regret cost one, so the first turns can develop and defend without a four-Energy spell. Poro makes an exhausted Gold when it conquers, and that Gold can later pay one Power of any domain toward Killer or Time Warp. Stupefy and Orb of Regret only give -1 Might, to a minimum of 1, but Stupefy also draws a card and has Reaction timing, while Orb of Regret is a Gear you activate on your own turn. Once you have four runes, plan each turn around one spell that spends at least four Energy, because that advances Virtuoso and unlocks Killer for one Mind Power.
MidgamePair the qualifying spell with the units it unlocks. Deadly Flourish or Curtain Call, then Killer for one Mind Power and Noxus Hopeful for two Energy, puts eight Might on the board in one turn, although both units enter exhausted and cannot move until your next turn. Curtain Call with one Repeat payment of one Energy deals 2 and gives -4 Might to the same unit at a battlefield, which is enough to kill a unit with 6 Might or less, but it has no Action or Reaction timing, so it is a Main Phase spell on your turn. Rocket Barrage deals 4 only to a unit in a base or kills a gear, and Singularity's two 6-damage hits cost six Energy and two Mind Power. Keep Consult the Past, or a Downstage Dramatics with its Repeat paid, for the opponent's turn when you want to store a spell without using your own Main Phase on it.
Late gameTime Warp costs ten Energy and four Mind Power and banishes itself, so aim for ten runes on the board, with the Power coming from Mind runes that you recycle after exhausting them for Energy. The extra turn starts with its own Beginning Phase, which kills any Sprites you still control before scoring, so the units that hold for you should be permanent ones like Thousand-Tailed Watcher, which costs seven Energy and one Mind Power, or eight and two with Accelerate to enter ready, and gives enemy units -3 Might this turn to a minimum of 1. Ferrous Forerunner leaves two 3-Might Mech tokens in your base when it dies, and Forecaster gives Mechs Vision, so a Forerunner played after it lets you look at the top card of your Main Deck and recycle it. Unchecked Power deals 12 to every unit at battlefields after exhausting your own units, so play it when your board is at base or not worth keeping, and Progress Day draws four for six Energy and one Mind Power when your hand has run low.

Battlefields

Frozen Fortress

Frozen Fortress · Curtain Call · Deadly Flourish

Fortress deals 1 to each unit there at the start of each player's Beginning Phase, before scoring, and that damage stays until the end of the turn. An enemy unit that was there when your turn began has already taken 1, so Curtain Call's 2 damage kills a 3-Might unit and Deadly Flourish's 3 damage kills a 4-Might unit. Your own units there take the same 1 at the start of both players' turns, so combat damage needs one less to finish them.

Rockfall Path

Rockfall Path · Consult the Past · Sprite Burst

Units cannot be played to Rockfall Path, so a unit hidden there would be stuck, since a Hidden permanent must be played to the battlefield it was hidden at, and Sprite Burst's Sprites have to enter at your base or at another battlefield you control. Hidden spells are not units, so you can still hide Consult the Past there once you control it and play it later for no Energy, although a Consult played from Hidden does not count toward Virtuoso.

Sideboard

Answers that do not wait for your Main Phase

Lost to the Sands · Decree of Rage · Decree of Insight

Lost to the Sands has Action timing and either deals 4 to a unit at a battlefield or kills a gear for three Energy and one Fury Power. Decree of Rage is an Action that cannot be countered, costs one Energy and one Fury Power, and deals 4 to an enemy Calm unit, while Decree of Insight is a one-Energy Reaction that gives an enemy Body unit -5 Might this turn and ignores Deflect while you pay for it. None of the three spends four Energy, so they do not advance Virtuoso or unlock Killer, which makes them swaps for own-turn spells such as Falling Star when waiting for your Main Phase is what is hurting you.

Answer Gear

Thermo Beam · Lost to the Sands

Thermo Beam is a five-Energy Action that kills all gear, including your own Orb of Regret and any Gold you have not spent, and it counts toward Virtuoso because it spends five Energy. Lost to the Sands kills only one gear but costs less. Bring either in for spells whose targets the opponent is not giving you, since Rocket Barrage in the main deck already kills a single gear.

Protect the finishing turn

Brynhir Thundersong

Brynhir's play effect stops opponents from playing cards for the rest of the turn, so a key attack after him cannot be answered with a card, although abilities still work. He costs six Energy and has 5 Might, which makes him a natural play on the extra turn from Time Warp. Bring him in for a spell that is not advancing the plan in that matchup.

Replay Watcher

Temporal Breach

Temporal Breach banishes a unit and has its owner play it again at the same location, ignoring its cost. On your own Thousand-Tailed Watcher, that repeats its play effect and gives enemy units another -3 Might for the turn. On an enemy unit it removes anything attached to it and any Might changes, but the opponent gets that unit's play effects again. It has no Action or Reaction timing unless you hide it at a battlefield you control for one Power of any domain, and then it can only choose a unit at that battlefield. Bring it in for a spell that is not doing work in that matchup, mainly when a second Watcher effect or resetting a unit loaded with Gear or buffs is worth two Energy and one Mind Power.

Clear small units

Bilgewater Tracker

Bilgewater Tracker is a 3-Might Fury unit for three Energy that deals 1 to each of up to two units when you play it, so it adds a body and handles small units in the same play. Bring it in for Orb of Regret or Stupefy when the opponent's board is made of small units.
