Jax makes the same Equipment useful on several different fighters. The skill is knowing which unit needs it now, and what you give up by taking it away from the last one.

Should you play Jax?

Pick Jax if you like winning combat through preparation and changing the opponent's calculation with one well-timed Equipment. You get plenty of decisions before the fight and inside it.

Best for: Midrange players who want resilient threats, combat tricks that replace themselves, and Gear that remains useful after its first bearer is gone.
Think twice if: You dislike managing several attached effects or keeping resources available. Playing every Equipment as soon as you can leaves the opponent much less to worry about.

Key Cards

Unmatched gives your Equipment Quick-Draw, turning a new Brutalizer into a Reaction that attaches without a separate Equip payment. Brutalizer gives its bearer +1 Might, with another +2 during a turn when it was attached to that unit. Grandmaster at Arms can transfer an attached copy before the next fight and give a different bearer that full +3. The Legend's transfer is not a Reaction; the new Equipment in your hand and the one already on the board have different timing.

Jax’s Field Guide

Jax lets you change which unit is worth fighting over. Grandmaster at Arms can exhaust to transfer an attached Equipment to another friendly unit, without paying Energy or Power. Attaching a detached Equipment instead costs one Energy and the exhaust. Both abilities need an open Main Phase on your turn, so make that decision before entering combat. You cannot wait for the opponent's removal and move an old Guardian Angel across in response. Unmatched supplies the other half of the plan: while he is in play, your Equipment everywhere has Quick-Draw. A new Equipment can then arrive as a Reaction and attach through its play trigger. You still pay the Equipment's play cost, and the opponent can respond before the attachment resolves.

How Jax wins

Use Equipment to turn a modest opening into a fighter the opponent cannot trade into cheaply, then keep developing behind it. The Gear normally survives when its bearer dies or leaves the board, detaching and returning to base if necessary. That means the next unit can pick up where the last one stopped. Jax makes moving already-attached Gear cheaper too, but you still need enough bodies to defend one battlefield while contesting the other. A huge attacker is only useful if the points it wins are worth the resources you leave exposed elsewhere.

Get another useful turn from Brutalizer

Grandmaster at Arms · Brutalizer

Brutalizer's extra two Might depends on being attached to its current bearer that turn. Transfer it to another unit before that unit attacks and it supplies the full +3 again. The old bearer loses the bonus immediately, so check any damage already marked on it before moving the Gear. Asking the Legend to attach Brutalizer to the unit already carrying it does not count as a new attachment. There needs to be an actual change of bearer, not an activation spent trying to refresh the same bonus.

Protect the unit without confusing it with the point

Guardian Angel · Counter Strike

Guardian Angel gives +1 Might and replaces its bearer's death by killing the Equipment, healing the unit, exhausting it, and recalling it to base. That saves the card, but it can still leave the opponent with the battlefield. Counter Strike prevents the next damage event instead and draws a card. Use it when keeping the fighter in place matters. Neither card is a general answer to banishment, returning a unit to hand, or removing the Equipment itself. Guardian Angel's replacement is mandatory, and a saved Scuttle Crab has not died for its Deathknell.

Make the protection improve the trade

Irelia, Fervent · First Mate · Discipline

Fervent gets +1 Might for the turn when you choose or ready her. First Mate choosing an exhausted Irelia, then actually readying her, gives two separate increases: she goes from four Might to six before other effects. Discipline gives her the usual +2 and a card, with another +1 from choosing her. Those are good reasons to use Irelia when the hand already has these support cards. Do not spend First Mate expecting the second increase if she is already ready, or mistake a ready unit at a battlefield for one that can move directly to the other battlefield without Ganking.

Strengths

Equipment can improve several fighters over the course of a game. Losing the first bearer does not normally mean losing the Gear too.
Unmatched makes unspent Energy threatening during a Showdown. Brutalizer can change the damage calculation, while Guardian Angel makes an otherwise profitable kill much less rewarding.
Calm protection and Body fighters give you several ways to keep a useful board. You can choose a safer carrier instead of putting every resource on the first unit you played.

Weaknesses

Equipment needs a bearer. Too many Gear and protection cards can leave an opening unable to contest either battlefield.
The Legend cannot transfer existing Equipment during a Showdown. A good attachment decision before combat matters as much as the trick you hold afterward.
Gear removal attacks the investment underneath the fighter, and saving a unit with Guardian Angel can still surrender a crucial point. Plan for the score as well as the trade.

Shadow's take

This is my Jax pick because the fighters give you different reasons to move the same six Equipment. Irelia rewards the Discipline and First Mate you already want to play, while Ruin Runner gives Brutalizer a home the opponent cannot simply choose with removal. The Gear itself is still fair game, so I would not treat Runner as permission to spend everything. Unmatched lets the next Brutalizer or Guardian Angel arrive during the fight, and the Legend puts an older copy on the unit that needs it before the next one. I like the way Faefolk and Rengar keep that from becoming a slow plan built around one protected unit. Faefolk can pull a defender out of another lane; Rengar can appear where the opponent already has units without needing you to establish a foothold first. First Mate then gives a useful attacker another action instead of asking you to draw a second expensive threat. The small units are doing real work along the way. Crab replaces itself, Poro can replace itself when it dies alone, and either can carry the Gear until something better arrives.

The Game Plan

Early gameKeep a cheap unit and a hand that can turn it into a useful board. Scuttle Crab finds another card immediately; Lonely Poro can contest and later draw when it dies without another friendly unit at its location. Equipment does not count as another unit. Unmatched is already waiting in the Champion Zone, but his five Energy and one Calm Power are not an opening plan by themselves. I would send back excess five- and six-Energy fighters before cutting the early body that gets you to them. A Brutalizer can be played before Unmatched and attached through the Legend for one Energy, so you do not have to leave it stranded in hand waiting for Quick-Draw.
MidgameChoose the fighter that solves the current problem. Irelia is efficient when you can choose and ready her; Ruin Runner is harder to remove with targeted interaction; Rengar can join an occupied enemy battlefield directly through Ambush. Rampage clears a defender before the attack, but both units damage each other. Counter Strike can prevent the return hit if it resolves first, and the optional Body Power on Rampage gives your unit +2 before either hit. Keep those payments separate from the resources needed to develop. Punch First is an Action for an open Showdown, not a Reaction to a spell already on the chain. Twilight Shroud must be played before the Showdown altogether. Its protection is excellent preparation, but it cannot rescue a unit after you have already let the opponent target it.
Late gameCount how the next point is actually scored before moving the Gear. First Mate can ready your best fighter, but this list does not give every unit Ganking. A ready unit at a battlefield may need to return to base before it can take the other one. Faefolk can pull a defender into its own fight and leave the other lane easier to conquer; do not make that pull unless you can afford the resulting combat. Lucian readies after his first conquest each turn, which is useful for returning to base or defending, not automatic permission to attack across the board. Keep enough Calm for Defy or the next attachment, and do not recycle every Body rune into Punch First if another turn is still required. Guardian Angel is a good way to preserve a threat, but not if recalling your last defender hands over the winning point.

Battlefields

Blind

Sandswept Tomb · Counter Strike · Punch First

Tomb keeps the protection plan from consuming as much Power. A spell choosing one or more friendly units here costs one Power less: Counter Strike needs only its two Energy, while Punch First still needs one Body Power alongside its Energy. The discount is once per spell, not once per target. It does not pay for Equipment or the Legend's ability. The opponent receives the same benefit when supporting their own units here, so keep that extra trick in mind before declaring a comfortable trade.

Going First

Abandoned Hall · Irelia, Fervent · Discipline

Hall rewards getting a fighter into position before the spells start. Once your spell resolves, Hall can give a friendly unit here +1 Might for the turn, even when the spell did something elsewhere. A countered spell does not trigger it. Choosing Irelia with that battlefield trigger gives her another increase of her own. Discipline can protect the established board without emptying your hand. The opponent's spells can strengthen their units here too; arriving first does not make the bonus yours alone.

Going Second

Star Spring · Rengar, Trophy Hunter · First Mate

Rengar can be the first non-token unit played here that turn and send another friendly unit here back to base. That can save a valuable carrier while leaving his six Might to contest the battlefield. The returned unit does not automatically ready. First Mate can help afterward on your turn, or you can return a unit that was already ready. Check whether either player has used Spring's first-play trigger already, and remember that moving a unit here does not trigger it.

Stop the answer before investing in the fighter

Decree of Strength · Disposal Order

The two Decrees remove a Mind card from the opponent's revealed hand, including a unit, before you commit to the Equipment plan. Disposal Order handles cards already in the trash: as a Reaction, it can recycle up to three opposing trash cards or simply draw one. Use it while the cards are still there, not after a replay has moved one onto the chain. I would start with Back Off when stun has few useful targets, then trim a Rampage if your units cannot win the mutual-damage trade. Keep enough actual protection to fight after the disruption.

Change the carrier, not the whole deck

Lucian, Merciless · Irelia, Fervent · Ruin Runner

The two extra Lucians lower the curve when six Energy for Runner is too slow. Lucian can take an existing Equipment through Weaponmaster, but Brutalizer and Guardian Angel still require their Calm Equip payment; Weaponmaster does not erase that domain-specific cost. The extra Irelia is for games where choosing and readying your own threat keeps paying off. I would trade an expensive body for Lucian when you need to contest earlier, and favor Irelia over a Rengar when direct battlefield entry is less important than repeated support. Keep Runner when its targeting protection is the reason you are surviving.

Take the Gear that is making their board work

Akshan, Mischievous

Bring the second Akshan when stealing Gear changes the game. His play costs four Energy, and the theft requires another two Body Power. The stolen Gear moves to your base and, if it is Equipment, attaches to him. You control it only while he remains on the board. Recalling him to base is different from returning him to hand: the former keeps him on the board, while the latter ends the theft. I would replace a less useful Rampage or a slower fighter rather than sacrifice the protection needed to keep Akshan around.

Choose movement or raw Might

Charm · Onslaught · Punch First

Charm is for a defender you would rather move than fight. It costs one Energy and one Calm Power and must be played during your own open Main Phase. Onslaught gives +6 Might for four Energy, then can be played once more from the trash for four Energy before being banished. It also lacks Action or Reaction. I would replace a Rampage with Charm when mutual damage is the wrong answer, or a Punch First with Onslaught when Power is the limiting resource and committing the Might before combat is acceptable. Keep the faster trick when waiting for the opponent's decision matters more.
