OrderBeginnerGaren rewards a conquest with four surviving units, not four units thrown into a fight. Build the board, choose when to commit it, and turn the extra cards into pressure somewhere else.
Might of Demacia draws two when you conquer with at least four friendly units at that battlefield. Commander helps a group survive by giving the other friendly units beside him +1 Might. Rugged takes the other approach: a 5-Might unit with Assault 2 and Shield 2, making him seven Might while attacking or defending. Choose between the shared bonus and the stronger individual fighter based on what your board needs.

Garen asks you to build a board before he gives anything back. His draw happens after a conquest with four or more friendly units there, so the Legend cannot fix an opening that has no units or help pay for the fight you are about to take. I would start by looking for a sensible curve and a battlefield those units can contest together. That does not mean waiting for four bodies before scoring. Take the easy point when it is available, and set up the larger conquest when keeping those units together is actually useful. The mistake is treating the draw-two trigger as an obligation. If earning it costs your best defender and gives the opponent the other battlefield, you probably paid too much for those cards.
Win a fight with enough of the group intact to draw two, then use that larger hand to keep putting units and answers onto the board. Commander is useful when several smaller units need the same extra Might; Rugged is useful when one fighter needs to carry the exchange. After scoring, decide which battlefield needs the next investment. The units you moved are still exhausted, and the Legend does not move or ready them, so drawing cards is not the same as immediately moving the army again. Sometimes the best follow-up is simply developing another defender at base. Garen still earns ordinary Hold points, but holding does not trigger his draw. Near the finish, protect the point that wins the game instead of chasing another four-unit conquest for value.

Four attackers are not enough if only three remain when you establish control. Work through the opponent's combat damage and likely interaction before committing the fourth unit. If four are present at the conquest and the draw ability triggers, losing one afterward in response does not cancel that trigger. The useful protection window is usually the fight itself, when saving the smallest body can be what earns both extra cards.
Garen, Commander
Commander gives each other friendly unit at his location +1 Might. With three companions, that is three extra Might spread across the group, not a bonus to Commander himself. Move them together when you want that increase in the same fight. If Commander is removed, the other units lose his bonus, so a combat that looked safe can change across the whole group. Do not judge the attack only by Commander's own five Might.
Garen, Rugged
Assault 2 applies while Rugged is attacking and Shield 2 while he is defending. Those bonuses do not stack into nine Might, and neither applies while he is sitting outside combat. His dependable combat size can free your smaller units to contest elsewhere, but it does not protect them or replace the four-unit requirement. I would use him to secure a point with fewer units when that leaves a better board than forcing the Legend trigger.
